Production
European Union countries play a major role in the world beverage market. Europe's spirit drinks industry is the largest in the world. In 2009 the European spirit drinks producers together produced 39 million hectolitres of spirit drinks valued at over 23 billion euros.
The EU spirit drinks market is very varied, from large producers to smaller independent distilleries, producing a great variety of drinks, making it impossible to provide an exact production breakdown into the various types of spirits.

In 2009 the top five spirit producing countries were:
- United Kingdom (11,500)
- France (6,030)
- Germany (3,733)
- Poland (3,200)
- Italy (3,179)
These five countries represent 71% of the volume produced in the EU27.

Value of spirits produced (in million euros)
In 2009 the top five spirits producing countries were:
- United kingdom (5,500)
- France (4,200)
- Portugal (3,400)
- Germany (2,900)
- Italy (2,300)
These five countries represent 78% of the production value in the EU27.
